Guitar Hero 2 Free-For-All at Phog Sundays!

Frank apparently LOVES the game Guitar Hero.
More specifically, he loves Guitar Hero 2 because the guitar players can do battle, or they can join forces, as one plays the lead, and the other plays the rhythm.

It has come to our attention that most people who play this game, love it, and we're going to give you a chance to play it on the big front window of Phog.

This upcoming Sunday, and for the next month of Sundays, we will be having Guitar Hero Night at Phog Lounge, andit will be open to all those over 19.

Now's your chance to actually get on stage, even if you're a hack like me (Tom).
Stay tuned, as the Guitar Hero Night may move to the middle of the week sometime in September.

Be there, or be a folk music God.

Windsor Live Music: Tara Watts to host Open Mic Surgery this Monday!

Ron Leary is heading out on the road again, and in his place, he is inserting the wonderful Tara Watts.
Phog invites you to come and see a rare hosting job by Tara, and to come and play a few tunes.

If you haven't heard Tara, than go to this link and see what the fuss is all about.

Windsor Live Music: Coco Love Alcorn (Vancouver) wsg Bradley (Vancouver)

This duo is going to be stellar.
Coco has been here before, and shocked people with her vocal talents beyond what anyone could have expected.

Bradley brings his unique electronic brand of music, which should be something unlike what Phoggers are normally used to...

Come see.

11pm start is expected.

Windsor Live Music: Steve Ward's Scattered Jazz Trio, or Quartet, or Quintet...

Windsor's Jazz trombone aficionado has been fronting a jazz group at Phog Lounge every Thursday from 5pm until 8pm (happy hours) and the result has been fascinating.

I know that many people who would enjoy this early-timed performance (the people who cannot get out to late evening shows) do not know about it yet.

So, here you go. Tell your friends that like live, stunning jazz ensembles about this day-gig.
There are many familiar faces from Hula Dog who show up and play a few songs here and there...but the group is always making itself maleable whether it be musically or just physically fitting on stage.

Come see them.
They're here EVERY THURSDAY 5PM-8PM.

Windsor Live Music: Nick Zubeck...why you'll love him.

Nick Zubeck, if any of you remember, played Phog with Barzin during his first visit.
Barzin had the slow, smooth appeal and as he slayed everyone in the room, we had no idea that Zubeck was on deck. We were unaware of exactly what we were in for.

Nick's website describes his music better than I ever will.
"A consistent emphasis on lush, delicately layered textures, a unique style of guitar-playing and songwriting, and captivating performances are some of the hallmarks of the music of Nick Zubeck.

He began studying music at the age of six at The Humber Community Music school, learning piano, theory, and ensemble playing. As an adolescent he took on the guitar as a second instrument and quickly discovered a true resonance with the instrument. He went on to study jazz guitar and arranging at the Humber College Jazz Program, before embarking on a career as a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer.

He has released two recordings under his own name and has contributed regularly to a diversity of musical projects including work with Polmo Polpo, Great Lake Swimmers, The Lavender Gloom, and Barzin among others. Nick has been an active performer for years and has toured Europe with Polmo Polpo in 2004, and with Barzin in 2006.

His current live band, Seahorse, consists of double-bassist Darren Wall (who has performed with Wynton Marsalis and Harry Pickens), drummer Marshall Bureau (A Northern Chorus, Erika Werry), and keyboardist Robbie Grunwald (Andrew Rodriguez, Everything All The Time, The Lavender Gloom)."

Windsor Live Music: Shapes and Sizes & They Shoot Horses, Don't They? & Nick Zubeck TOMORROW (Thursday) @ Phog

With Shapes and Sizes (Montreal) and They Shoot Horses, Don't They? and Nick Zubeck coming this Thursday, people need to realize the significance of this show.

Not only are Shapes and Sizes playing The Majestic in Detroit the night before (tonight), they also opened for The National during their last visit to Detroit at The Magic Stick.
Don't miss this show, or you'll be left in the lurch!

Stole this from Pitchfork Media:
Shapes and Sizes Impress Sufjan, Circle North America
Montreal's peculiar popsters Shapes and Sizes know how to do the buzz-garnering thing; they've got plenty of chatter going behind their just-released Asthmatic Kitty LP Split Lips, Winning Hips, a Shiner, and their fine taste in tourmates can't hurt getting the word out. The band will hop on the National bandwagon in early June, and follow that with a month of dates with fellow oddballs They Shoot Horses Don't They.

In yet another entry in his burgeoning career as hypeman, the Shapes have been sized up by labelmate/occasional musicmaker Sufjan Stevens. Suf-dogg recently penned up a long string of impressionistic non sequiturs after taking in the band's set at Brooklyn's Union Hall:

"They hardly let the songs take flight before shooting them down with the cunning of a duck hunter. But this is where things get interesting. The jumping and barking of hound dogs, the breathless sprint to the mallard, slumped and bloodied in a sanctuary of water, the howling reeds, the ghost of the wind. Well, my metaphor gets the best of me here."

DJ Dreams For Nickels is going to make more people shake their heads this Saturday. And that's not an easy task when all the heads have been shaking from the night before...Square Root of Margaret (Chatham) wsg The Canons (London) & Eric Welton.

It is going to be so solid on Friday, that the DJ skills of DJ Dreams For Nickels will be working overtime to bring you back to earth.

I have yet to have a DJ play more content that forces me from behind the bar to ask, "Who the hell is this!?"

Come and see these shows! They will not disappoint!
